STACK AND SLASH QUILT

What a wonderful find stack and slash truly is. I made 6 blocks in under an hour using this method. This really is a great way to make up those crazy quilt blocks without having to print paper templates or follow patterns, just stack, slash, sew and press.

You Will Need …

6 different colour 12” (or 16”) squares (this will give you 6 finished blocks)

Putting the blocks together …

Make sure that each of your squares is exactly 12” (or 16”) in size. Stack the squares neatly on top of one another.

Make your first slash anywhere thru the stack of fabric. (I used my ruler and rotary cutter to do this).

You will now have two stacks of slashed shapes. From the right hand stack take the bottom piece of fabric and place it on the top of it’s stack.

Take both stacks over to your sewing machine and sew the top piece from the left stack to the top piece from the right stack. You will now have one block made up of two different fabrics. Repeat this step to make up the remaining five blocks. Press and stack in the same order.

Make your 2nd slash wherever you want through the stash and then take the bottom 2 pieces from the right hand stack and place them on the top of their stack. Sew the two separates stacks together as before, press and stack.

Make your 3rd slash, take the bottom 3 pieces from the right hand stack, place them on the top of the stack and sew, press and stack.

Make your 4th slash, take the bottom 4 pieces from the right hand stack, place them on top and sew, press and stack.

Make your 5th slash, take the bottom 5 pieces from the right hand stack, place them on top and sew, press and stack.

Just as you were getting used to the process it changes a little …

Make your 6th slash but this time only take the bottom 3 pieces from the right hand stack and place them on the top of the stack. Before sewing together make sure that you like the combinations and that no two like pieces will be sewn together then sew and press.

You should now have 6 approximately 10” (or 14”) size blocks.

Remember the more times you slash, press, sew and stack the crazier your blocks will look and the smaller they will become.
