Remembrance Day Quilt
Something else we celebrate in England is the 11th November, also known as Remembrance Sunday. The ceremony for this is held at the Cenotaph in London and started in 1921 as an expression of national homage devoted to the remembrance of those who gave their lives in World War I, it now includes everyone who suffered and died during conflict for their country. The ceremony is a beautiful one and always brings tears for lost ones.
So I thought it would be great to create a Remembrance Day Block. During the ceremony we drop thousands and thousands of red poppies on the all the attendees at the Royal Albert Hall.
What you will need to make the Remembrance Cross ...
White Fabric
Wood Grain Printed Fabric
Red Fabric
Black Fabric
What you need to do …
Cut a 18” x 18” square of White Fabric.
Print a copy of the cross and enlarge it so that it fits perfectly in the centre of your 18” square of White Fabric.
Cut out your Cross, Poppy and Poppy Centre templates, using freezer paper or steam a seam or whatever your preferred method of appliqué template is.
Now cut out your Cross from the Wood Grain Printed Fabric and appliqué this onto your White Square.
Now cut out your Poppy from the Red Fabric and appliqué this onto your Cross.
Now cut out your Poppy Centre from the Black Fabric and appliqué this onto your Red Poppy.
You now have your completed block.
You can use this as the front for a cushion or make up more blocks and make a Remembrance Quilt.
Your choice, but have fun deciding. I think I will make mine into a small quilt and send it to my father back in England.
It really doesn’t matter what you do with this block, as long as every time you see it you REMEMBER!!!
